Astelin – All The Secrets Behind Astelin

Astelin (also known by its more generic name of Azelastine) is an anti-allergic and a stabilizer for mast cells. What does that mean? That means it tries to do two things: relieve the symptoms of allergic reactions, as well as keeping the ‘mast cells’ from releasing chemicals that cause the reactions, helping the reaction to not occur in the first place. It is available both in the form of a nasal spray for the treatment of diseases like hay fever and as an eye drop for the treatment of allergic conjunctivitis (‘allergic conjunctivitis’ is just a fancy name for what is more commonly called ‘allergy eyes-‘ you know, that itching, burning and watering that a lot of people get with their allergies. ) It is an antihistamine which is prescribed for the treatment of various nasal symptoms which are caused by seasonal allergens and related environmental irritants.

Some of the benefits of the Astelin nasal spray are:

  1. It is an steroid free antihistamine; that means it is generally safer than many older treatments, which relied on steroids for their effectiveness.
  2. It is extremely effective and rapid acting for efficient treatment of various conditions like itchy nose, sneezing, and postnasal drip.
  3. It blocks the effects of various allergy inducing histamines and thus helps the patient by giving him instant relief from various allergens.
  4. It provides relief a patient from both types of allergy symptoms. It treats allergens (like trees, grass and other similar substances) and irritants (like perfumes, cigarette smoke and other substances with a strong smell).
  5. It has proved to be better than many or all other anti-histamines that are available in the market.
  6. It is backed by years of scientific research and has been used by a large number of satisfied people worldwide.

Although Astelin has been known to be one of the best medicines available for the treatment of various allergy symptoms induced by allergens and other irritants, it still has some side effects. Some of them are:

  • Headache, rhinitis (‘rhinitis’ means basically ‘nasal cold symptoms,) bleeding nose and bitter taste.
  • Adults who are treated for vasomotor rhinitis have been reported of experiencing trivial side effects of dysesthesia and sinusitis.
  • Burning sensation in the nasal passage, dry mouth, nausea, fatigue, dizziness.
Some adults being treated have also reported weight gain.
